Quartz is the most popular kitchen countertop material, and trending up. Granite, the second most popular countertop material, is trending down.

  • Quartz  is slightly different in that it is not 100 percent natural. Instead, countertops are manufactured using 95 percent ground natural quartz and 5 percent polymer resins.
  • What we have seen over last two years…  went from 50% of projects, to more like 90% now
  • Can cost 20-30% more depending on the designs
  • Cost for granite driven by supply and demand
  • Cost for quartz driven by design

Why

  • Designs available
  • Marble
  • Natural look
  • Non-porous-  historically used in medical environment, easier to keep counters bacteria free
  • Harder than granite-  more durable, but can be susceptible to heat damage
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Granite needs to be sealed annually
  • Quartz does not due to the non-porous nature of the material
  • Uniformity-  don’t have to worry about variation in the design (don’t need to “pick” a slab)
  • At the end of the day, the trend is towards quartz, but both are great options for your countertop selection-  can come down to aesthetics and budget
